centerpiece of Bodrum and occupies what was once an island in the
bay, and now divides Bodrum into two harbors. The initial walls were
completed using materials from the Mausoleum, and reflect the European
crusaders of that time.By the middle of the 15th century this was
the last Chiristian stronghold in Anatolian and was handed over to
the Ottomans early in the next century. It is now home to the Institute

MAUSOLEUM
As ancient authors tells
us, in the 4th century BC(When the place was called Halikarnossos),
the city had a king by the name of Mausolos. When he died, his queen,
Artemisia, wanted to have a magnificent tomb erected in his memory
so she invited to the most illustrious architects and sculptors of
the day to come and build it.The result was the Mausoleum, a glorious
funeral monument. It was one of the seven wonders of the world, but
sadly little of it remains in site. What the crusaders left after
building the castle, the early explores took the British Museum, and
than local people themselves decided to use bits and pieces around
the Bodrum. |

NIGHT LIFE OF BODRUM
Bodrum offers many things but one of Ęts'
night life.We have perhaps the best nightclubs in Europa, let alone
Turkey-Halikarnos, where lasers bounce off castle turrets, and cut
through huge fountains spouting up from sea.
The night life is second to none, and
goes on and on, to the wee small hours! |

OPEN
MARKETS
On thursday friday the people of the area
gather in Bodrum's centre to buy and sell fruits, vegetables and virtuallyanything
else that's edible. A few years ago in response to comlaints that
the traditional Bodrum market had grown so huge as to make it unwieldy
and inconvenient, the Bodrum municapility issued an ordinance separating
the fabrics bazaar is now held on Tuesday. Like the food bazaar, this
one is a lively and colorful affair in which women are in greatest
evidence and you'll find them from all over-American, English, Irish,
French, Danish, Dutch, and more-comparing colors, searching for patterns,
and dickering over prices. |
